Wessex League Cyclocross Round 10, Thruxton report

And so to round 10 and the motor racing circuit at Thruxton or more precisely, the carpark. Today however, the grass field was covered from end to end with markers and tape on the tightest, grassiest, switchbackiest, hill repeatiest course of the season.

After observing a minute silence for the sad passing of cross legend, Geoff Shergold. The vets field of 80 riders blasted the 200 metres to the first corner and the beginning of the "Maze of Great Dizzyness" named due to the mind boggling number of switchbacks within switchbacks within… well you get the idea. And that was pretty much the course, long laps, repeated dead stop corners followed by tough climbs up the hillside, a few off camber turns to get you sliding and a set of barriers thrown into the mix.

Riding the Vets race for Sotonia CC was Jez Hart, Phil Connell, John Phillips and Martin Ward. Phil and Jez started pretty well, too well in Jez's case because after catching and passing Phil, he slowly realised that his legs couldn't cash that particular cheque. He latched onto the next group of five and yoyo'd off the back of that till the final lap when he managed to reel two in before the line in 34th, with Phil 28th. John Phillips was our next finisher (50th) with Martin bringing up the rear guard (75th). The race itself was not won by Crispin Doyle for once, who told me he didn't mind rubbing shoulders with the leaders but was too polite passing a group of back markers and ended up getting delayed (not sure I'd tell that to Pete Hargroves if I was him!). Lewis King, Beeline Cycles took the win with Mike Simpson of GS Henley second.

In the senior race, our man was Darren Sell (pictured) - another Sotonia convert to cross in his first race! And he looked to be riding strongly as we cheered him on to 24th place. The winner was Andy Hargroves with a touching tribute to Geoff in a race I'm sure he would have loved to watch.

Report on Wessex Cyclo Cross League Round 8, Basingstoke

On a fast course at the War Memorial Park in Basingstoke, we were treated to strong winds and sunshine, where it didn't seem to have rained as much as the south coast. Grassy straights made for a quick pace, while wooded technical and BMX sections with slick, compact mud made for some pretty challenging corners, best negotiated foot out, speedway style.

The combined Vet/Junior/Women’s race attracted another huge field of 97 riders and with the course dry it was a fast lap. Crispin Doyle (Hargroves Cycles) continued his winning streak and led almost from start to finish despite a tangle with the course marking tape - with the wind gusting strongly, a few rear mechs managed to suck in unwanted tape.

Joe Andrews of Fareham Wheelers (regular at the Thursday night training sessions at Southampton Sports Centre) also continued his form by not only leading the junior race but running in the top ten of the overall race.

Sotonia fielded a record turnout for recent years of eight riders with six in the vets race - John Phillips, Jon Dudley, Phil Connell , Simon 'Brucie' Guard, Martin 'Mr Mud' Ward and Jez Hart.

The Senior race had a much larger field than usual too, with Dave Belcher and James Peckham flying the flag, James in his first ever cross race, put in a great performance, scything through the field after starting at the back of the grid and seemingly unphased by the technical bits (the odd tree excepted!)

Great to see so many in the club giving cross a go and loving it!

Report on Wessex Cyclo-Cross League Round 5 at Eastleigh

After last years successful first hosting of a Wessex League Cyclo-cross event, this years event was even bigger and better. Nearly 200 riders of all ages came to race on a beautiful autumn sunny day.

Six Sotonia riders lined up for the Vets race - Jon Chapman, John Phillips, Phil 'Squadron Leader' Connell, Simon Guard, Martin Ward and Jez Hart in a huge field of 88. The course was changed a bit this year and featured a long uphill sprint start to spread things out before heading into the wooded area beside the old golf course. The route then twisted its way down the hill with plenty of technical turns, banks and switchbacks, before a long climb back up the grassed area, through a sand bunker (which caught plenty of riders out) then turning back into the woods once more.

The race quickly thinned out with riders spread around the course, and was won by Crispin Doyle (Hargroves Cycles) claiming his fifth straight win of the season. Phil led the charge for Sotonia finishing in 25th place. Jez Hart came in 38th and despite a crash and then puncture on the last lap forcing him to run most of it, Simon Guard managed 40th place.

In the Senior race, Steven James (Hargroves Cycles) continued from where he left of last week by winning again. Steven was in a strong group of five riders but his strength took him to the front by mid distance and he soon built on this lead to the bell. Dave Belcher racing for Sotonia in the field of 32 riders, finished 30th.
