Sotonia Summer Criterium 2 report
Despite the Summer holidays meaning many of our youth riders were absent, there was still a good turnout for us in the younger age categories at last weekend's final Sotonia Summer Criterium of the year at the Winchester Park & Ride Circuit. In the U8 boys, Oskar Ciaramella was 3rd with Ella Ridgment and Poppy Carline 1st and 2nd in the girls race. In the U10s Sam Ridgment was also on the podium in 2nd place with adopted rider, Olivia Allman and Evelyn Mills taking 2nd and 3rd.
In the seniors, the 4th cat race saw the main bunch unusually staying together until the final lap when Nick Barber (Hart Evolution RT) powered away on the back straight to hold on for the win from Jordan Sewry (Casp Racing) and Neil Adlam (Andover Wheelers) with Sotonia’s Justin Menhenett in fourth place to cement his promotion to 3rd cat, junior Harry Parsons, 11th.
In the 3rd cats it was a case of another race, another lapped field for Tom Budden. After a cagey start, a group of three leapt clear of the bunch including Tom, Jed Webber (Andover Wheelers) and Kevin Bell (Langdale Lightweights RT). After a few more laps, the other two were unable to stay with Tom’s pace and cornering skills who went on to lap the field. Jed managed to stay away from the bunch for the last 20 minutes. In the final, the bunch sprint was also won by Tom with Sotonia’s Ben Hames 3rd, Russell Speight in 4th and Phil Godfrey 9th to top off a great team performance.
There was an unexpected twist in a women’s race that needed one more rider with the IRIS race team tempting Mel Mills away from her role at the sign-on desk to give it a go. The race itself was won by Becca Carter (Team WNT Pro Cycling) who lapped the field twice.
Sotonia Summer Road Race - Report
James Boyman carried on where he finished last weekend by winning the latest running of the Sotonia CC Summer Road Race. The twenty eight year old from Farnham riding for the Hoops Velo team was the winner last week on the rolling Stockbridge Down course and today’s race at Owslebury was a similar terrain which obviously suited him.
Boyman came to the front with about two laps to go and built himself a nice little 20secs gap which he managed to hold onto on the final lap as there were attempts from several riders which didn’t manage to come to anything.
The morning started warm and sunny as the peloton of 67 riders rolled through the village and onto the course proper for a first of 7.5 laps of the 8 mile course. This Owslebury course is a hard one with very little respite as it rolls along the North Hampshire countryside.
After the first full lap, two riders Steve Thomas (Ride 24/7) and Ben Lockett (PM) were holding a slender lead and this looked like a decent move early on but Thomas slowly slipped away on the next lap and then on lap two the race all came back together.
The prime on lap 4 was taken by course favourite Matt Downie (Primera-Team Jobs), closely followed by James Peckham (Sotonia CC).
It took another couple of laps before the next meaningful attack came and when it did it was again Matt Downie along with Tom Lane (Latcham Sunwise RT) pulling on the front with Michael Ford (VC St Raphael) and Joe Hickerton (Spokes BPC Racing) a handful of seconds further back. It was around this point when Boyman came through the bunch to take the lead.
As Boyman started to build his lead Downie was looking for help but was unable to find any and he found himself heading backwards towards the bunch. As our leader put 20secs into the bunch it took until the bell before the attacks and first to react was Colin Parry (Ride 24/7) and Frazier Carr (Team Vision Innovative Leisure), followed by Downie and Ford and then the remainder of the bunch.
At the finish Boyman had managed to increase his lead to 36secs with Ford taking second and Christopher Rothwell (Ride 24/7) third in the bunch kick from teammate Parry a further 8secs down.

Sotonia Summer Criterium 1, Sunday 18 June 2017
Now in it’s fourth year, the Sotonia Summer Criterium series returned for 2017 on Sunday and a scorching hot day it was too! That didn’t stop our youth racers enjoying themselves in the sun in the first races. The U8 and U10 Sotonians were there in force with 12 of our youngsters taking part. Oskar Ciaramella best placed U8, 3rd place boy, Skye Martingale 2nd placed girl. In the U10s, George Connell led for most of the race to take 1st place boy, Isabella Hall 2nd girl.
In the senior races, Justin Menhenett and junior, Harry Parsons rode the 4th cat race. Justin suffered a puncture while sitting comfortably in the front group but Harry finished an impressive 9th place in his first ever race.
In the 3rd cats, Tom Budden, Phil Wilks and David Baxter lined up for Sotonia. Phil and Tom did the lions share of the work on the front of the bunch as rising temperatures appeared to discourage any attacks until 10 laps to go when Tom made his move, quickly building up a lead of 30 seconds that never looked in threat to take the solo win as Phil policed the bunch behind to finish 9th, David Baxter 12th.
The final E12 race featured Ed Slot for Sotonia along with local talents Matt Downie (Team Primera Jobs) and Paul Double (Zappi RT), on a break from racing in Europe as well as Masters Criterium champion, Mike Smith (Nuun-Sigma Sport). The heat again played a part, ending Ed’s race and finishing with a bunch sprint won by Will Fox (Catford CC).

May Race News Round-up
It's been a busy few weeks of race action for the club - here's some of the highlights of a great month for team Sotonia...
Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers Road Race
Five team members took on the BJW 2/3/4 race on the hilly Lulworth circuit: Brook Elgie, Phil Godfrey, Ben Scott-Munden, Ed Slot and James Peckham. We showed some aggressive racing with an attack by Ed who stayed away from the bunch for a lap in pursuit of the break before James earned a cracking 9th place from the bunch kick.
Tour of Milburys stage race
Ben Scott-Munden, Russell Speight, Ed Slot and James Peckham were in action in this two stage race around Meonstoke. Ed was top Sotonia rider in the short 6km Time trial stage up Old Winchester Hill, finishing 18th out of 85 riders.
In atrocious conditions of rain and mud, the road race on the Owslebury circuit was nearly cancelled. But James was feeling good and attacked the bunch on lap two and again later to finish 6th in the final sprint and a brilliant 12th place on GC.
Battle of the Bowl, Matterley
Offroad, Phil Godfrey had a great race in this two hour cyclocross epic at Matterley Bowl near Winchester, finishing 10th overall.
VC Venta Summer Criterium 1
The first Winchester Park & Ride criterium of the year featured nine Sotonia youth riders in the U8 and U10 categories. In the senior races, Justin Menhenett had a successful circuit debut with 8th place after a bold attack on the lead group before the last lap. In the cat 3 race, Tom Budden tried a similar tactic, finishing 9th after being baulked by a rider sliding out on the last corner.
Sandie Radford Road Race, Nomansland
There was another big team start for local legend Glenn Longland's annual road race. Andy Mackay tested his legs with the first attack of the day, then the team worked hard to bring back eventual winner, Matthew Downie’s attack into the wind, early in the 40 mile race. Another selection then formed, with Sotonia’s James Peckham part of a five man break. James eventually took a fine 4th place on the tough final climb of Pipers Waite. Behind, Red Walters leapt clear of the chasing bunch to hold on for 7th with Brook Elgie 10th in the bunch kick after Ben Scott-Munden’s leadout (25th) to give the team a well deserved 3 in the top 10. Phil Wilks also worked tirelessly on the front of the bunch (27th), Phil Godfrey (15th) and Andy Mackay (28th).
James: “Top team performance today. Andy in the early break gave us a free ride until Matt attacked first time in the crosswinds. The team all then took turns to chase down Matt."
Brook: “Ben took control of the bunch at the end and brought back a load of people."
Southern XC MTB, Crow Hill - 28 May
Tom Budden had his best result in Expert class with 4th on the challenging Crow Hill course for the Regional Championships after heavy rain made for tricky conditions with many slippery roots on the sharp climbs of the wooded course. Tobie Charlton was 11th in his first Expert race and Jez Hart 29th in the V40 race.
Sotonia Summer Criterium 1, Sunday 18th June
Our next club event is the first of two Sotonia Summer Criteriums, held at Winchester Park & Ride on Sunday 18th June. We will again feature our 'race village' complete with sound system plus cycling apparel from Vintvelo and refreshments from Coffee Cruiser and Gelarto Ice Cream. Don’t miss out – online pre-entry is available here
Stockbridge Down Road Race - 23 April 2017
The Stockbridge Down Road Race hosted by Andover Wheelers, saw three Sotonia riders - James Peckham, Brook Elgie and Ben Scott-Munden take the start line this year after junior, Red Walters was forced to pull out with a knee problem. For this tough E1/2 National B race, they were up against the likes of UCI Continental team, BIKE Channel Canyon and in a race of 80 miles, 5,700ft of climbing and speeds over 24mph, it's a hard job just to finish in the bunch. Brook and James both excelled with top 30 finishes - well done guys!
Brook: "A grippy, attritional race where the splits were determined by Winton Hill, and who could either stay with the front group, or bridge over to it before Crawley. I tried to follow the moves in the first couple of laps, but missed the split that stuck. Unlike some years, it was windless and sunny, so a fast day. Fairly smashed by the last lap, and finished somewhere in the top 25."
James: "It was a super hard race, break went quite early and then me and Brook were in the chasing group. Got progressively harder, at the start of the fifth lap, our group split and we had to work really hard to get back in. Brook put in a big effort to bring us back. I paid for it on the penultimate time up Winton hill, dropping off the group. Brook finished just outside the top 20 and I managed to hold off the next group for hopefully a top 30. Thanks for all the support out there today and to Penny for marshalling."
Thanks to Andover Wheelers, the marshals, commissaires, NEGs and everyone who made for another top event.
Sotonia kicks off Thruxton race series
Sotonia kicked off round 1 of the Thruxton circuit race series last night with some strong, attacking riding. James Peckham continued his good start to 2017 with 6th place in the E/1/2 race - having topped rider and team tables in the South DC time trial points competition already this year.
James: “I missed the winning break of four, so went off the front on the bell lap. I was joined by another rider and just managed to hold off the bunch for 6th!”
Ben Coward was also in the points with a well deserved second place in the 4th cats having made a two man break with 2 laps to go. Ben: “The pace in the bunch was slow and no one wanted to do any work so I just kept peeling off the front until someone went with me.”
Next up is the Stockbridge Down Road Race this Sunday, April 23rd, where James will be part of a team of four Sotonia riders with Ben Scott Munden, Brook Elgie and Red Walters. They will be up against the likes of UCI Continental team, BIKE Channel Canyon and action in this lumpy 80 mile race starts at 10:30am - the very best of luck guys!

The Road to Sotonia
I tell people that I’ve done more cycling outside the club than in it. This is true, but as a member of Sotonia I’ve had more fun than at any time in my cycling career.
Cycling life started at the age of 10 when my brother joined the Kingsgate and Venta Road Club. My father ferried the time trial team to events in his black Ford Prefect, and every Saturday night during the summer the house reeked of Elleman’s Athletic Rub, the human horse liniment. At the crack of dawn they would leave for the race, transporting the bikes on a roof rack with them upturned and secured with toe straps fastened round the handlebars and saddle – three bikes on top, three riders in the car, and so no room for me.
The day the Kingsgate ran their open event was my chance. Dad boiled kettles of water using two Primus stoves and served tea and cakes at the foot of St Catherine’s Hill on the old Winchester by-pass - I was his helper. It seems as if nothing has changed except dad is no longer with me and the Primus stoves have long gone!
At 13, I road my first time trial on the Colden Common to Bishops Waltham course at the instigation of Eddie Woodford, a founder member of Sotonia CC – 10 miles in a time of 32:08 on a pre-war Hercules bike with a fixed wheel. I continued using this bike for about a year until a young man with red hair persuaded me it was time to try gears. My beloved 1948 lugless Claud Butler arrived, the frame purchased by Bill (the redhead) from his postman for 10/- and the second-hand components donated by various club members. I rode by first 25 on the P18, Winchester to Basingstoke and back!

In 1964 I joined the Antelope CC, one of the founder clubs of Sotonia. That year a group of us, including Eddie who was now a member of the Antelope, raced on the Isle of Man, travelling to Liverpool in an old Commer van with the bikes and Eddie’s trike strapped to its roof in the time honoured way - a dreadful journey in torrential rain.
The years passed with periods off and on the bike – I bought a Peugeot tandem to enable my son Peter to ride with me. We travelled far on that thing – on and off road – in Britain and abroad, often with Barbara Braithwaite and Chalky White. When Peter stopped riding, I continued on my new TJ Quick, the Claude Butler’s frame having broken under the weight of child and shopping!

More years passed and a call from Bill (the redhead) got me training for a visit to the Black Forest in Germany. At this point I joined Sotonia CC as a second-claim member and was organising turbo training sessions at the clubroom at Valley Park; Ian Stewart was the Club Secretary and Julian Gee the Chairman. This was 2009, when Ian was diagnosed with a heart condition and was forced to resign as Secretary. I was asked if I would stand as General Secretary at the AGM, I agreed and became a first-claim member of the Club. It has been great fun since then – Wednesday rides with the Wobblers; the occasional time trial, both solo and on a tandem; the odd weekend hostel trip; helping riders in 12- and 24-hour races (and the occasional 100-miler); organising reliability rides; and, of course, brewing tea and serving cakes!!
